Travel accident insurance is a specialized type of travel insurance plan. It acts as life insurance and protection against accidental death and dismemberment in the event of a travel accident. The benefits are paid regardless of whether the traveler has other life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment insurance.
The plan coverages the following:
- Accidental Death and Dismemberment
- Emergency Evacuations
- Repatriation
- 24/7 Travel Assistance Services
Some travel accident coverage can include a small amount of protection for emergency medical expenses as well. There are a few travel accident insurance plans that give the traveler a maximum benefits range to choose from; many of which are specifically for the frequent business traveler and provide protection for non-medical emergency evacuations.
Who Purchases Travel Accident Insurance?
Travel accident insurance is specialized insurance to cover a specific need, such as the loss of life or limb. It is ideal for business firms who, for instance, may want to offset the loss of a key employee.
Other travelers who purchase this coverage include:
- War correspondents
- Journalists
- Government employees
- Frequent business travelers
- Missionary and aid workers
If insured travelers die on their trip or become seriously injured, their beneficiaries or the traveler would receive the benefit of this plan.
Benefits and Exclusions
Benefits can be written based on employee classification on a multiple of salary or flat dollar basis and may include benefits for accident medical expenses, disability, permanent total disability, coma, paralysis, and other additional benefits. War Risk and Political Evacuation benefits are also available. Other coverage options may include scenarios such as traveling in company-owned aircraft, piloting, felonious assault, bomb scare, relocation and coverage for non-employee directors.
Some travel accident insurance plans limit the death benefits to flight accidents only, and some travel accident plans place limits on where the traveler can travel such as specific countries and territories. Just about all plans require the traveler to be at least 100 miles from home before the coverage is in effect. It is important to have an insurer who understand business philosophy and has the expert industry knowledge to connect you with the right solution.
